2007 Element House

This image is a photo of the South side of the 2007 Solar Decathlon house, named the Element House. The concept for the University of Illinois' Solar Decathlon house was a flexible modular system that could provide utility-independent housing for temporary or seasonal use. The 580 square foot house features readily available appliances and products such as the cedar siding you see on the exterior.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign won two of the ten Solar Decathlon contests in October 2007.   Elementhouse, Illinois' student-built solar-powered house competed with entries from 19 other universities from around the world on the national mall in Washington, D.C., Oct. 2-20. Illinois earned top honors in the Market Viability and Comfort Zone contests and placed ninth overall.
